Washington Proposes Plan to Resume Russian Gas Transit to Europe via Ukraine

The United States has advanced a strategic proposal to restart Russian natural gas transit to Europe through Ukraine as part of ongoing efforts to broker an energy ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv before the winter season.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, …

The initiative was put forward by Steve Witkoff, the Special Envoy of United States President Donald Trump, alongside presidential advisor and son-in-law Jared Kushner during their diplomatic visits to Moscow and Kyiv in September 2026.

Under the framework of this proposal, Russian natural gas sales to Europe would be conducted through an American intermediary. According to reports, this mechanism is designed to circumvent European sanctions restrictions while generating substantial economic benefits for United States investors.

Washington has suggested that financial revenues generated from the sale of Russian gas be deposited into an escrow account within a third country. This measure is intended to prevent Moscow from utilizing the funds for military expenditures, while ensuring that Ukraine receives transit fee revenues in exchange for maintaining the flow of gas.

American officials view the return of Russian gas to the European market as an economic incentive to encourage Moscow to accept an energy ceasefire, while also helping to lower energy prices across the continent.

Nevertheless, the plan has encountered considerable resistance in Europe. Current European Union regulations mandate that purchases of Russian natural gas must cease entirely by the end of 2027, and several European officials have voiced firm opposition to the proposed resumption.

Transit of Russian gas through Ukraine was suspended following the expiration of the bilateral transit agreement on January 1, 2025. Prior to the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, Russia supplied nearly 45 percent of Europe’s consumed gas. However, this share declined sharply in subsequent years, leading the European Union to legislate a complete ban on Russian gas imports by the conclusion of 2027.
