American authorities announced that five members of a family who had traveled to Cooperstown to participate in a baseball tournament were killed after their small plane crashed in a wooded area in upstate New York.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed in a statement that the single-engine Piper PA-46 crashed after takeoff from Alfred Nader Regional Airport in Oneonta around 2:00 p.m. Sunday, the paper reported.

New York State Police explained in a press release that the victims were from the state of Georgia and said that the wreckage of the plane and the remains of the five people on board were found Sunday evening in Masonville. In the search operation, drones, ATVs and helicopters were used to investigate the crash site, which was about 200 kilometers northwest of New York City.

Police said the family was returning to Georgia after attending a tournament in Cooperstown, home to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Federal Aviation Administration and the US National Transportation Safety Board have started an investigation into the incident.
