The new agreement between the military leaders of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso
The military leaders of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso signed a new agreement in Niamey, the capital of Niger. The purpose of this treaty is to strengthen the alliance of countries in the Sahel Basin (AES); A mutual defense pact announced last year.
This is the first joint meeting of the military leaders of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso since the coup in their countries and their coming to power. It should be remembered that the three countries left the ECOWAS organization (Economic Community of West African States) in January 2024.

Simultaneously with the signing of this treaty, the heads of the countries emphasized on the sovereignty over their resources. Burkina Faso’s leader accused Western powers of trying to exploit their country. The Mali leader also said that an attack on one member will be considered an attack on all.
The government of Niger announced earlier in a statement that the country has canceled the military agreement with the United States. On the other hand, at the end of last year, the government of Niger also canceled military cooperation agreements with France and forced this country to withdraw its forces from Niger.
The United States is completing the withdrawal from its main base in Niger by July 8, 2024. French forces have withdrawn from all three countries in December 2022. Germany will also withdraw its forces from the Niamey Air Base by the end of the year.
