The leader of South Korea’s ruling party has resigned

This statement was published during the general meeting of the ruling party lawmakers, after the cancellation of the impeachment motion against Yoon Suk-yul, the president of this country, following its failure in the parliament.

The impeachment motion needed the support of at least two-thirds of the 300 members of parliament to be approved.

Following South Korea’s president’s decision last week to declare emergency martial law, which failed after the country’s lawmakers stormed parliament and voted to repeal it, opposition parties have proposed Yoon’s impeachment. Sook-yul had been mentioned.

The opposition parties needed the votes of at least 8 lawmakers of the ruling party to pass the impeachment bill.
