China Responds to Trump’s Threats Against BRICS
China has reacted to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to impose an additional 10% tariff on countries supporting BRICS policies, according to a report by webangah News Agency citing Newsweek.
Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, stated: “BRICS is a crucial platform for cooperation among emerging markets in developing countries.” She emphasized that the group promotes “open, inclusive, and mutually beneficial collaboration” rather than confrontation and targets no specific nation.
The Chinese diplomat reiterated beijing’s stance: “China has clearly expressed its position multiple times regarding U.S. tariff hikes. Trade wars have no winners, and protectionism leads nowhere.”
Trump had declared on his social media platform Truth Social: “Any country aligning with BRICS’ anti-American policies will face a 10% tariff penalty without exception.” Though, he provided no clarification on what constitutes these alleged “anti-American policies.”
BRICS currently comprises 11 members: Brazil (hosting the ongoing 17th summit), Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE Ethiopia Indonesia and Iran. The bloc recently condemned U.S.-Israel aggression against Iran and criticized rising tariffs.
The progress follows a recent Sino-U.S. trade agreement where Washington eased certain restrictions while Beijing accelerated exports of rare earth minerals.
