NATO Secretary General Urges Europe to Buy American Weapons for Ukraine
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Rosia Al-Youm via Mehr News Agency, NATO Secretary general Mark Rutte called on European countries Monday to buy U.S.arms in support of Ukraine.
The appeal was made during an online meeting of the Special Ukraine Contact Group.
NATO issued a statement after the session saying, ”The Secretary General, addressing participating defense ministers, emphasized an initiative announced last week alongside former U.S. President Donald Trump.”
According to the statement, this initiative aims to strengthen support for Ukraine by providing U.S. weapons funded by European countries and Canada.
Rutte had previously assured Washington that Europe would secure the necessary funds to cover these weapon purchases.
Donald Trump, who had earlier criticized the Biden administration’s multibillion-dollar aid package for Ukraine, unveiled last week a new mechanism for equipping Ukraine through NATO allies.
Under this arrangement, the U.S. will sell a large shipment of weapons-including missiles, air defense systems, and ammunition-worth several billion dollars to European countries. These nations will then deliver the arms directly to Ukraine and replenish their military stockpiles with new purchases from American companies.
Trump emphasized that this plan has been fully approved and will soon be implemented with funding from NATO member states.
