UK Prime Minister on the Verge of Recognizing the Independent State of Palestine
According to the English section of webangah News Agency,citing Mehr News Agency and TASS,The Times reported that Keir Starmer,the UK Prime Minister,is expected to propose a plan this week for the formal recognition of the state of Palestine.
The newspaper attributes this potential move to increasing pressure from the ruling Labor Party, led by Starmer. According to The Times, members of Starmer’s cabinet are urging him to recognize Palestine as part of fulfilling Labour’s election campaign promises.
The party returned to power following the July 2024 general election with this pledge. The Times noted that around 130 Members of Parliament from the ruling party have called for recognizing Palestinian statehood.
Quoting a spokesperson for Starmer, the Times wrote that he “has shared a plan currently being developed with European leaders aimed at bringing lasting peace in coming days; a plan recognizing Palestinians’ legitimate right to an independent state.”
Meanwhile,The New York Times cited two senior UK government officials stating that Prime Minister Starmer is actively considering recognizing an independent Palestinian state and “is increasingly close to making this decision given unprecedented humanitarian conditions and widespread hunger in Gaza.”
