Turkey’s Interior Minister Details Casualties from Yesterday’s Earthquake Near Istanbul

authorities​ in Balikesir Province in northwestern Turkey report ‍one fatality and the collapse of more than 10⁤ buildings ⁣following yesterday’s earthquake.

The English section of webangah News Agency quoted the​ associated Press via Mehr‌ News Agency, reporting‌ that a magnitude 6.1 earthquake⁢ struck Balikesir Province in northwestern Turkey, ​killing at least one‌ person and causing the collapse of over 10 buildings.

Officials stated that at least 29 people were injured in the quake. The epicenter was near the town of Sindirgı,and tremors were felt as far as 200 kilometers north,including in Istanbul.

Turkey’s‌ Interior Minister Ali yerlikaya saeid an elderly individual died shortly after‌ being⁢ pulled from rubble. He ‍added⁤ that a total of 16 buildings collapsed throughout Sindirgı, most of ​which are now abandoned and uninhabitable.Two mosque minarets also collapsed during the quake.

Located on a major ‍fault line, turkey frequently ⁢experiences earthquakes. In 2023, a devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake killed more than 53,000 people across southern and southeastern provinces and destroyed hundreds of thousands of buildings.⁢ The‍ same event resulted in approximately 6,000 fatalities in ⁣northern Syria.
