Macron-Supported Government Falls After Parliamentary Vote of No Confidence
According to the English section of webangah news Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Euronews, the government backed by President Emmanuel Macron collapsed following a no-confidence vote against the French prime minister.
The French Parliament voted today, Monday, to withdraw confidence from Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne’s government.
Borne’s administration began its term less than a year ago after the fall of Michel Barnier’s previous government.
Facing a mounting government debt crisis and proposing a €40 billion austerity plan, Borne had asked the National Assembly for a vote of confidence.
After losing this vote, the prime minister is expected to resign tomorrow morning, Tuesday.
President Emmanuel Macron now faces two options: dissolve Parliament or appoint a new prime minister.
If Macron chooses to name a new prime minister, that individual will become his fifth head of government since starting his second presidential term.
The next government’s greatest challenge will be managing the budget amid ongoing debt pressures.
This past summer 2024, President Macron dissolved the National Assembly in anticipation of early elections. However, his allies not only failed to secure a majority but also won fewer seats than in 2022. Currently, no party or coalition holds an absolute majority in Parliament.
Al Mayadeen reports that France’s National Assembly voted 364 out of 578 against Élisabeth Borne’s government, leading to its downfall.
