Nepal Anti-Corruption Protests Death Toll Rises to 72
The English section of webangah News Agency, citing Reuters via Mehr News Agency, reports that according to the ministry of Health in Nepal, 72 peopel have died so far during anti-corruption protests that began last week.
The ministry stated that rescue teams continue searching for bodies inside shopping centers and other buildings damaged during the unrest.
Prakash Boudatoki, spokesperson for Nepal’s Ministry of Health, said firefighters are currently recovering victims trapped under debris from buildings set on fire or damaged amid protesters’ attacks.
The latest data also shows at least 2,113 people have been injured during these disturbances.
The demonstrations were triggered by the blockage of several social media networks.Numerous government buildings-including the Supreme Court building, Parliament, and police stations-as well as commercial properties and politicians’ residences such as those of President Rajendra Poudel and Prime Minister Sharma Oli were set ablaze.
Oli resigned last week. Former Supreme Court Chief Justice Sushila Karki was appointed interim prime minister with responsibility for organizing new parliamentary elections scheduled for March 5, 2026.
