Former Congo President Disappears Following Death Sentence Issuance
The English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Al Jazeera, reports that a military court in congo has sentenced former President Joseph Kabila to death in absentia.
General Joseph Mutombo Katalay, who presided over the military court, stated that Kabila was found guilty of multiple crimes including treason, crimes against humanity, murder, sexual violence, torture, and rebellion.
Kabila served as president of Congo from 2001 until 2019. He left the country in 2023 but recently traveled to Goma in eastern Congo-an area controlled by the rebel group known as M23.
The former Congolese president was tried in absentia last July on charges of supporting Rwanda-backed rebels who seized large parts of eastern Congo earlier this year.
Rwanda denies providing military support to this rebel group; however, United Nations experts say the Rwandan army played a ”crucial” role in their offensive.
Following the military court’s verdict against Kabila, his current whereabouts remain unknown.
