Uruguay’s Broad Front Decides to Join Palestine Support March
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing El País, Uruguay’s ruling left-wing coalition, the Broad Front, has opted to participate in a pro-Palestine march. The event is scheduled for tomorrow, October 9th, starting at 6:30 p.m. on one of Montevideo’s main streets.
Fernando Pereira, leader of the Broad front, emphasized the importance of assembling large crowds during a press interview. He stated that the Broad Front is a powerful social actor in Uruguay with meaningful mobilization capabilities. “From our perspective,” Pereira said, “what is happening in Palestine amounts to genocide adn warrants a response from us as well as from many countries worldwide condemning Benjamin Netanyahu’s government actions.”
Pereira also noted that social activists are working to establish humanitarian corridors for aid delivery to Gaza. ”The tragedy unfolding there cannot be ignored by Uruguayan society or by the Broad Front,” he added.
He further explained that the Broad Front’s National Policy Table issued a statement condemning what it called Netanyahu government-led genocide. The statement calls for an immediate humanitarian corridor allowing entry of food and medicine.
The coalition expressed strong support for hundreds of activists attempting to break Gaza’s blockade-especially endorsing the global Freedom Flotilla initiative-and condemned the illegal detention of Uruguayan nationals in international waters. The Broad Front also demanded an immediate ceasefire alongside respect for human rights and international law.
The statement reaffirmed commitment toward promoting a sustainable peace solution based on two states within borders agreed upon in 1967. It urged Uruguay’s government to continue backing international efforts aimed at reaching this essential resolution.
Pereira concluded by pointing out that political opposition parties have either remained silent or voiced conflicting views regarding this issue; however, he said his party will not request any change in governmental rhetoric on it.
