Istanbul Governor Imposes Espionage Charges on Erdogan’s Political Rival Imamoglu

The Istanbul prosecutor’s report states that the investigation focuses on Imamoglu’s “connections with foreign intelligence agencies” and the “strategic nature of his election campaign.” It reviews some of his activities as potential spying on behalf of foreign countries.
The attorney general’s statement notes that digital content uncovered during the inquiry was analyzed and found to include images of passports belonging to individuals alleged to have ties with Imamoglu and foreign nationals.
The statement adds that this information was exchanged through encrypted dialog apps, which investigators have classified as espionage activities.
