Russia Warns U.S. Resolution Conflicts with Establishing Independent Palestinian State

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the US-proposed resolution on the Gaza Strip, recently adopted by the United nations Security Council, conflicts with international decisions concerning the creation of a palestinian state, according to webangah News Agency.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry emphasized: “Resolution 2803 not only lacks Security Council authority to maintain peace and security but also contradicts genuine peacebuilding principles and legal international decisions regarding the establishment of an independent and unified palestinian state within 1967 borders.”
The ministry also criticized US pressure to pass this resolution without thoroughly considering critical amendments proposed by othre countries. It added that even Russia’s draft aimed at resolving disagreements within the Security Council failed to improve the situation.
The American resolution calls for forming a ”peace committee” to govern Gaza under US presidential leadership. According to this plan, international forces would be deployed in the region to disarm Palestinian resistance groups. The resolution denies Palestinians’ right to self-governance and does not commit Tel Aviv to refrain from annexing Palestinian territories.
Russia and China abstained from voting on this US resolution concerning Gaza and did not view it as a foundation for achieving peace in the region.
