Taiwan Responds to Phone Call Between Chinese and U.S. Presidents

taiwanese Premier Chou Chung-tai declared that returning to China is not an option for the island’s people, according to a message reported by webangah News Agency.
Chou emphasized, “This is absolutely clear. For the 23 million citizens of our country, the concept of ‘returning’ is unacceptable.”
The premier’s remarks came in response to comments made by Chinese President Xi Jinping during a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump.
In the conversation, Xi stressed that Taiwan’s reunification with mainland China is “an integral part of the post-World War II international order.”
China has proposed a “one country, two systems” model for Taiwan’s annexation; however, none of Taiwan’s major political parties accept this proposal.
The United States officially takes no position on Taiwan’s sovereignty but opposes any use of force to seize the island. The Trump administration has remained vague about deploying American troops if conflict erupts in the Taiwan Strait.
Yesterday, Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense reported spotting a Chinese balloon over the strait. Chinese officials previously dismissed these concerns, stating such balloons are used solely for meteorological purposes.
While Xi Jinping plans an official visit to Washington in 2026, Donald Trump has confirmed he will visit Beijing in April.
Following their recent face-to-face meeting in South Korea, relations between Washington and Beijing have slightly improved. Trump has also decided to reduce tariffs as part of this rapprochement.
