U.S. Opposes Transferring Seized Russian Assets to Ukraine

A European media outlet reports U.S. opposition to using seized Russian assets for Ukraine.

the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News ‍Agency, reports that the European website Politico Europe quoted two senior European diplomats as saying the governance of former U.S.President‍ Donald Trump opposed the European Union’s‍ plan to use frozen Russian assets to finance a reconstruction loan⁢ for Ukraine.

According‍ to the report, during summer meetings in Washington between David O’sullivan, the EU’s sanctions representative, and ⁣U.S. officials,American⁢ authorities explicitly told him their plan was to return these assets to⁢ Russia after any peace agreement is signed.

politico Europe wrote that these U.S. statements reflect Washington’s objection to Europe’s use ⁤of frozen Russian funds to provide direct aid to‍ Ukraine and highlight American concerns about how ⁢such measures could affect relations with Moscow.

The EU proposed leveraging Russian assets frozen in Western countries as part of‌ a €140 billion loan package intended to support kyiv over the next two years. The U.S. opposition threatens this European initiative with⁢ serious challenges.

Earlier, Belgium’s Foreign Minister ⁤Maxim Prévot told politico that the EU decision to offer loans backed by seized Russian assets could disrupt efforts toward resolving the Ukraine conflict.

Peace negotiations mediated by the United States have so far failed to resolve disagreements over border delineations. Both Moscow and Washington accuse European countries of obstructing progress ⁣in talks.
