Iraqi and U.S. Officials Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Ties, Regional Stability

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein hosted U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Michael Riggus in Baghdad on Tuesday to discuss bolstering bilateral relations and addressing regional challenges. The meeting focused on security cooperation, economic development, and de-escalation efforts involving Syria and Iran.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met with U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Michael Riggus in Baghdad on Tuesday, focusing on ways to strengthen bilateral relations between Iraq and the United States.

During the meeting, both parties explored avenues for enhanced cooperation in various political, economic, and security domains. Discussions included addressing regional and international challenges, particularly efforts to achieve stability, emphasizing the need for dialogue with a focus on the situations in Syria and Iran. The importance of reducing tensions and fostering understanding to bolster regional security and stability was also underscored.

Minister Hussein highlighted Iraq’s role in supporting efforts to achieve stability, emphasizing the importance of de-escalation in the region. He lauded the forthcoming opening of the U.S. consulate in Erbil and the strengthening of diplomatic cooperation between the two nations. He also stressed the necessity of reopening the U.S. consulate in Basra.

The Iraqi Foreign Minister emphasized the significance of continued coordination between Iraq and the U.S., as well as sustained cooperation in economics, infrastructure, and investment to bolster development and support the return of American companies for investment in Iraq.

Hussein called for a review of travel advisories to Iraq, citing the improved security situation in the country and the opportunities this presents for investment.

Michael Riggus commended Iraq’s progress in enhancing stability and security, affirming U.S. support for these efforts. He emphasized the importance of ongoing regional and international coordination to address economic, political, and security challenges, highlighting the significance of cooperation within the framework of positive bilateral relations with the Iraqi government.
