CNN later reported an announcement from Brown University stating that a suspect had been apprehended within the campus grounds. However, Brown University issued a separate statement emphasizing that students should remain in secure locations, clarifying that police had not yet arrested any suspect.

President Donald Trump initially claimed that the shooter was in custody and that the FBI was on the scene. He subsequently revised his statement, posting on his social media that the suspect in the Brown University shooting was not in custody.
