Syrian Army Targets ISIS Cells After Attack on U.S. Troops in Palmyra

Syrian forces have launched an operation against ISIS cells in the Homs countryside following a deadly attack on American soldiers and allied forces in Palmyra, according to Syrian media reports.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Syrian media reported that the Syrian army initiated an operation targeting ISIS cells in the areas of al-Farkalas, Qaryatayn, and Badiyah in the Homs countryside. This action is a response to the Saturday attack on American forces and allied troops while they were conducting a joint patrol in the city of Palmyra.

A Syrian security source informed Al-Jazeera that five individuals, including three suspects believed to be involved in the recent shooting in Palmyra, were apprehended during the operation.

The Ministry of Interior of the interim Syrian government issued a statement regarding the Saturday attack in Palmyra, stating that the incident occurred during a meeting between Syrian security officials and a delegation from the international coalition forces. The attack on the joint Syrian-American forces resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and one translator, with two others sustaining injuries.

The ministry further asserted that the attack aimed to destabilize security and undermine joint efforts in combating terrorism. They had previously warned about ISIS’s attempts to carry out attacks and emphasized the need to enhance vigilance in the face of these threats.

On Saturday morning, December 13, 2025, an attack targeting American forces and allied soldiers during a joint patrol in the city of Palmyra in central Syria led to the deaths of two American soldiers and one translator.
