Sudan’s Prime Minister Proposes Comprehensive Peace Plan to End Civil War
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Sudanese Prime Minister Kamal Idris has presented a comprehensive peace plan aimed at ending the civil war ravaging the country. The proposal calls for a ceasefire jointly monitored by the United Nations, the African Union, and the Arab League, contingent upon the withdrawal of Rapid Support Forces (RSF) from all occupied territories and their simultaneous disarmament.
Idris also proposed an internal Sudanese dialogue during a transitional period to agree on governance principles, culminating in internationally supervised general elections. He expressed hope for unconditional support from UN Security Council members, describing the plan as complementary to the Saudi-American-Egyptian peace initiative.
The plan’s provisions make RSF support unlikely, as it would effectively grant military victory to government forces and eliminate the paramilitary group’s influence. Idris warned that the ceasefire stands no chance of success unless RSF forces are confined to barracks, emphasizing the need for Security Council backing.
The conflict, which began on April 15, 2023, between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF forces commanded by his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, has killed tens of thousands and displaced approximately 12 million people, creating the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
