Venezuela Appoints New Diplomatic Representative to the United States

Venezuela has named Félix Plasencia as its new diplomatic representative to the U.S., marking a step in bilateral discussions amid thawing relations.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Venezuelan interim President Delcy Rodríguez has designated Félix Plasencia as the country’s new diplomatic representative to the United States. The appointment follows recent diplomatic engagements between the two nations, including a meeting between Venezuelan Foreign Minister Iván Gil Pinto and U.S. envoy Laura Dogu to discuss a “shared agenda” covering trade and political matters.

The move comes days after Dogu, the newly appointed U.S. chargé d’affaires to Venezuela, arrived in Caracas. Washington appointed Dogu, previously the U.S. ambassador to Nicaragua, on January 22 to oversee diplomatic operations in Venezuela in the absence of an ambassador.

Diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Venezuela were severed in 2019 during Donald Trump’s presidency but have shown signs of potential re-engagement under the current administration.
