White House Officials Concerned About Security Breach Involving Classified Audio Recordings

Senior White House officials are reportedly concerned that two New York Times journalists may have obtained audio recordings of classified meetings held in the White House Situation Room, potentially compromising sensitive national security discussions.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, citing Al Jazeera and the Axios news outlet, some senior White House officials are worried that two reporters from The New York Times may have gained access to audio recordings of confidential meetings in the White House Situation Room.

Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan, in their new book titled “On the Verge: Inside Donald Trump’s Empire” scheduled for release on June 23, 2026, have quoted portions of confidential discussions from these meetings. The release of excerpts from this book in The New York Times has raised concerns within the U.S. administration, as it precisely details conversations held in highly classified sessions regarding the war with Iran and the Jeffrey Epstein case.

A source within the U.S. administration told Axios that American officials are concerned that some of the most sensitive topics discussed in these meetings may have been recorded, although it remains unclear which sessions might have been exposed to such an event. The issue is particularly sensitive because the use of any independent recording devices is strictly prohibited in the White House Situation Room, an area considered one of the most secure facilities in the world.

Meanwhile, White House officials have not denied the accuracy of the conversations quoted in the book. Among these accounts is a statement attributed to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, expressing skepticism about regime change scenarios in Iran proposed by Benjamin Netanyahu.

Axios also reported that Donald Trump is reportedly furious over the release of precise accounts from classified White House meetings. However, the report emphasizes that the existence of audio files from these sessions has not yet been confirmed, and it is possible that the book’s authors reconstructed these conversations through interviews with individuals present at the meetings – a method previously employed in other political works. According to the book’s authors, over a thousand interviews were conducted to prepare this work.
