US Senators and Trump Administration Agree on Enhanced Russia Sanctions

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Reuters reported that four prominent US senators, representing both the Democratic and Republican parties, announced in a joint statement that after months of consultations, they have achieved a final agreement with the Donald Trump administration to promote and approve updated legislation for heavy sanctions against Russia. The senators, Richard Blumenthal, Lindsey Graham, Jeanne Shaheen, and Roger Wicker, expressed their satisfaction with this significant progress. They emphasized that as Russia escalates its killing of civilians in Ukraine, the cooperation between the legislative and executive branches to impose a heavy price on buyers of Russian oil and natural gas and to disable Putin’s war machine is an urgent necessity.

This bipartisan bill, spearheaded by Republican Senator Graham, aims to exert extraterritorial pressure by imposing significant financial sanctions and tariffs on countries that continue to trade with Moscow and purchase its energy exports. This action is directly designed in response to what is described as “Moscow’s obstruction of negotiations and failure to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine.” This unprecedented agreement between Congress and the White House comes as Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during his recent trip to Ankara. The tone of this meeting marked a 180-degree shift from the past, with no sign of Trump’s sharp criticisms and dismissive language, such as previously calling Zelensky “ungrateful.” The US President positively assessed the meeting, emphasizing that a “very good” connection has been established between them and that both involved parties (Moscow and Kyiv) now desire an end to this four-year attritional war, which began in February 2022.
