Kurdistan Region President Barzani Visits Damascus; Iraqi Flag Absent from Reception

Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, was hosted in Damascus by Syrian transitional period head Ahmad al-Shar’a. Notably, only the Kurdistan Region flag was displayed during the welcoming ceremony, a departure from established protocol.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, was welcomed in Damascus, the capital of Syria, by Ahmad al-Shar’a, the head of the transitional period in Syria, on Monday. Data published by Mehr News Agency, citing Shafaq News, indicated that during the ceremony, only the flag of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq was displayed. This action is contrary to official customs and protocols.

Given that the Kurdistan Region of Iraq is an autonomous area within the federal country of Iraq, the Iraqi flag should have been displayed alongside the flag of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Discussions between the two sides are set to focus on Syrian-Iraqi and regional relations, as well as a number of issues of mutual importance. They will also explore avenues for strengthening cooperation and coordination in political, security, and economic fields.

Previously, Dilshad Shahab, spokesperson for the President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, stated that this visit was coordinated with Prime Minister of Iraq Ali al-Zaidi. The purpose of the visit is to support security and stability and enhance cooperation between Baghdad, Damascus, and Erbil.
