Russian Finance Minister’s Surprise Appearance at G20 Summit Stuns European Officials

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, CNBC reported that European officials were shocked and taken aback by the unannounced presence of Anton Siluanov, the Russian Finance Minister, at a G20 summit held in the United States. Previously, the Russian Ministry of Finance had announced that Siluanov and his American counterpart, Scott Bessent, engaged in discussions regarding bilateral cooperation during the Asheville meeting in North Carolina. This marked the first time the Russian Finance Minister had attended a G20 gathering since the start of the Ukraine war in 2022. The presence of the Russian delegation was met with protests from several European countries, with European representatives refusing to be present for the official G20 photograph in protest. However, Russia’s return to the G20 does not signify a complete normalization of relations with the West. Bessent emphasized during his meeting with Siluanov that the United States is not prepared to offer economic concessions or new agreements with Russia until the conclusion of the Ukraine war. Nevertheless, the Trump administration has defended Russia’s participation in G20 meetings, stating that dialogue with Moscow is considered beneficial. A final decision has not yet been announced regarding the potential attendance of Vladimir Putin himself at the G20 Leaders Summit scheduled for December 14-15, 2026, in Miami, although the United States has welcomed Russia’s high-level participation.
