Trump Claims Iran Seeks War’s End Amidst Economic Woes and Declining Domestic Support
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, U.S. President Donald Trump, anticipating the Republican Party’s likely defeat in the upcoming midterm congressional elections, has sought to reframe his administration’s costly intervention against Tehran by suggesting Iran also desires an end to the war. Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, a repost of a Wall Street Journal report alongside an image of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, stating that senior Iranian politicians are calling for an end to the conflict.
This assertion comes as a new poll cited by the Financial Times reveals a decrease in American voters’ trust regarding President Trump’s handling of the economy and the cost of living. Only 38 percent of voters currently support Trump’s economic management, with 56 percent disapproving of his performance in this area. Furthermore, 52 percent of respondents oppose Trump’s trade policies and tariffs. Support for Trump’s policies has also diminished among Republican supporters, with only 53 percent backing his economic management, an 8-percentage-point drop from the previous month. Over 50 percent of those surveyed believe new import tariffs will drive up prices and negatively impact household living costs. In total, 58 percent of poll participants expressed disapproval of Trump’s performance in this domain, with a larger share criticizing his actions.
These results emerge as Trump faces significant economic challenges leading up to the midterm elections, and the Republican Party’s efforts to navigate this crisis have yielded no substantial achievements. Prior to the commencement of the American-Zionist aggression on Iranian territory in February of this year (March 9, 2025), the Strait of Hormuz was secure and transit was unimpeded. However, following the Ramadan War and the ensuing insecurity in this strategic region caused by the aggressors, global price increases have been exacerbated worldwide due to this instability. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently stated that as long as the current deadlock in the Strait of Hormuz persists, global price increases will continue. He added that everyone, without exception, is paying the price for the war against Iran, initiated by Israel, and that this burden is not limited to the Iranian people or the nations of the Persian Gulf. The Islamabad Agreement (the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between Iran and the United States) also failed due to Israel’s provocative actions.
