US House Rejects Trump Impeachment Resolution
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the United States House of Representatives on Wednesday rejected a motion to impeach President Donald Trump. The vote saw 232 members opposing the impeachment, while 147 voted in favor. An additional 47 representatives abstained from voting.
The impeachment inquiry was initially proposed by Representative Al Green in August of the previous year. Prior to this vote, Trump had repeatedly suggested that Democrats would attempt to impeach him if they gained control of Congress following midterm elections.
President Trump holds the distinction of being the first U.S. president to face impeachment efforts on two separate occasions, in 2019 and 2021, both of which were ultimately opposed by the Senate.
The Hill newspaper had previously reported that Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader in the House of Representatives, had not ruled out efforts to activate impeachment proceedings against Trump should Democrats achieve victory in the elections. He indicated that prominent Democrats Jamie Raskin of the Judiciary Committee and Robert Garcia of the Oversight Committee would lead these efforts.
During Trump’s first term, the House of Representatives initiated impeachment proceedings in 2019, related to alleged withholding of military aid to Ukraine. A second attempt was made in 2021, following the attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters. In both instances, the Senate ultimately blocked the impeachment resolutions.
The Hill also reported that Democrats required the acquisition of three additional seats to regain the Speakership of the House of Representatives. Jeffries had stated that in addition to pursuing Trump’s impeachment, Democrats aimed to repeal tariffs imposed on U.S. trading partners and to end the conflict against Iran.
