EU Commissioner: Ukraine Membership Not Possible by 2027, No Special Privileges

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Marta Kos has stated that Ukraine’s membership in the European Union by the January 1, 2027 date proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is not possible. In an interview with the Italian newspaper “Corriere della Sera,” Kos clarified that accession is based on merit and that the specified date is unrealistic.
Kos stressed that Ukraine will not be granted any special advantages or discounts in its membership process and must meet the European Union’s necessary criteria and implement required reforms. She acknowledged that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine has significantly altered Europe’s geopolitical landscape, re-establishing the expansion of the European Union as a renewed priority.
The European Commissioner expressed optimism that additional chapters of Ukraine’s accession negotiations with the EU will be opened by the end of the current year. She also reiterated that a gradual integration process for Ukraine will not serve as a substitute for full membership, and there is no shortcut to achieving it.
