UK Intelligence Chief Repeats Baseless Accusations Against Iran

The head of Britain’s domestic intelligence agency, MI5, has reiterated unsubstantiated claims made by the Prime Minister regarding Iran’s alleged involvement in hostile activities, citing a significant increase in foreign threats.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Ken McCallum, the chief of Britain’s domestic intelligence organization, MI5, on Tuesday repeated the baseless allegations against Iran that were made by his country’s Prime Minister the previous day. These claims were presented without any supporting evidence.

McCallum asserted that MI5 is currently facing a situation where the “scale of its operations against terrorism and state threats has almost doubled,” attributing this to a fourfold increase in threats from foreign adversaries over the past decade.

In his annual address at the intelligence organization’s headquarters in London, he also warned of escalating alleged threats from Iran and “far-right extremist terrorism.” McCallum made an unfounded claim that Iran is orchestrating a hybrid campaign within Britain.

The senior intelligence official alleged that 50 individuals were arrested last year in connection with activities linked to Iran. He further stated that the “National Security Act” of 2023 has been extensively utilized to counter threats posed by China, as well as Iran and Russia.

These remarks follow statements made by British Prime Minister Andy Burnham in the House of Commons the previous day. Burnham leveled unsubstantiated anti-Iran accusations, alleging that an attempt to attack the “Fairford” base was likely coordinated in Iran and directly by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Burnham also indicated that further sanctions would be imposed on Iran following the Fairford incident.
