Iran Emphasizes Bilateral Ties Development at IMF-World Bank Meetings

Iran views its participation in the International Monetary Fund and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok as a key opportunity to strengthen economic and banking relationships and pursue previous agreements, expressing optimism for regional cooperation.

According to the Economic Desk of Webangah News Agency, Iran’s delegation to the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Bangkok, Thailand, highlighted the importance of the event for advancing economic and banking interactions. The delegation viewed the meetings as a valuable platform for discussing multilateral issues, conducting bilateral negotiations, and following up on prior agreements with other nations.

Hossein Keshiri, Director General of International Cooperation and Relations at the Central Bank of Iran, stated that the primary objective of the Iranian delegation’s presence was to foster stronger connections with countries with which the Islamic Republic of Iran has existing economic and banking ties. He also noted that regional developments, energy matters, and the impact of sanctions were discussed, with Iran presenting its perspectives on these subjects.

Keshiri reported successful negotiations with the Iraqi delegation, underscoring the continuation of cooperation and follow-up on established agreements. He assessed the outlook for economic cooperation between Iran and countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region as positive, considering the meetings an ideal opportunity for engagement. The discussions highlighted Iran’s regional political and economic capacities and the interest of dialogue partners in expanding bilateral cooperation, with outcomes noted from talks with countries including Algeria, Pakistan, and Iraq.

Furthermore, Keshiri pointed to the effective participation of the Iranian delegation in the G24 meeting and their contributions to the discussions. He also mentioned constructive exchanges with Eurasian countries on the sidelines of the IMF sessions. Keshiri emphasized the necessity of developing alternative mechanisms for trade settlements, especially amid financial restrictions tied to the US dollar, advocating for countries to adopt diverse payment and settlement methods to ensure unhindered trade.

Keshiri also referenced two speeches delivered by the Governor of the Central Bank of Iran, Abdolnaser Hemmati, which were well-received. Hemmati’s addresses focused on technical matters related to the IMF, economic issues of concern to Iran, and the country’s political and economic stances. He stressed the importance of examining the role of international economic institutions in supporting nations during times of war and crisis, calling for these bodies to design and implement practical programs and mechanisms to aid economies and meet critical needs during emergencies.
