UN Experts Demand Independent Inquiry into India’s Protest Crackdown

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, UN experts have urged for an independent investigation into the siege and suppression of recent protests by Indian authorities. Protesters in India are demanding the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar, the Chief Election Commissioner, citing alleged changes in voter lists designed to benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Over 20 UN experts issued a statement indicating that despite the peaceful nature of the gatherings, law enforcement agencies reportedly used force against unarmed students, including baton charges, and prevented thousands from joining the demonstrations.
The experts added, “We call on the authorities to immediately cease the excessive use of force, lift the blanket ban on assemblies, and refrain from misusing digital surveillance tools, including biometric technologies and internet shutdowns.”
The call from UN experts followed the Delhi High Court’s decision on Monday to extend the judicial custody of two leaders of the “Cockroach Party” movement for another two days, after their arrest five days prior.
Protesting groups in India contend that the removal of 130 million names from voter rolls disenfranchises eligible citizens and disproportionately affects the poor, homeless, and ethnic and religious minorities, such as Muslims, who are less likely to vote for the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.
The ruling party and the Election Commission have attempted to refute these allegations. The Election Commission claims it is in the process of removing duplicate entries, deceased individuals, and those who have relocated, asserting that anyone erroneously removed can file an objection.
