European Parliament Awards Sakharov Prize to International Criminal Court

The European Parliament has awarded its prestigious Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to the International Criminal Court (ICC), recognizing its efforts in upholding justice and human rights.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, sources have revealed that the European Parliament has bestowed its Prize for Freedom of Thought upon the International Criminal Court.

The Socialist and Democrats group within the European Parliament had nominated the ICC for the award, particularly in the wake of sanctions announced by then-U.S. President Donald Trump against the court.

The “Sakharov” Prize, which comes with a €50,000 award, is presented annually to honor human rights defenders and champions of freedom of thought.

Named after Andrei Sakharov, a Soviet physicist and political dissident, the prize typically invites final nominees to attend a ceremony at the European Parliament. This year’s ceremony is scheduled to take place during the Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg in December.

Past recipients of the Sakharov Prize include prominent figures such as Nelson Mandela and Alexei Navalny, as well as Belarusian journalists and the people of Ukraine.
