Albanian Parliament Erupts in Chaos as Opposition Clashes With Ruling Party

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Albania‘s parliament was the scene of heated verbal and physical confrontations between lawmakers on Thursday. The unrest escalated after opposition members demanded the suspension of parliamentary proceedings, accusing the government of employing force against protesters.
The capital city of Tirana has experienced widespread clashes and protests over the past week, resulting in more than 300 injuries and the arrest of dozens of demonstrators.
During a voting session, opposition representatives gathered in front of the speaker’s podium, displaying images of a protester injured by police. Following this action, some lawmakers began throwing water bottles towards the speaker’s area, triggering the ensuing scuffles.
Sali Berisha, the opposition leader and head of the Democratic Party, stated, “Opposition representatives today decided to be the voice of the student movement. Parliament lacks legitimacy. This institution cannot continue its activities.”
Concurrently with the parliamentary session, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the parliament building. Student protests in Albania, aimed at increasing support for the education sector, have been ongoing since last week. These demonstrations coincide with renewed calls for the resignation of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama.
