US Fatigue With Netanyahu Mounts as Election Stalemate Impacts America-Israel Ties

An election stalemate in the Israeli occupied territories has dashed hopes in Washington for a swift recalibration of U.S.-Israel relations, which have become strained under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s prolonged tenure. A former Trump administration official noted a ‘fatigue with Netanyahu’ in Washington following the election results.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, a former official in the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the opposition’s victory in the Israeli elections could have provided an opportunity to govern Israel in a less provocative manner and prevent the current detrimental trajectory. This former official, referencing the atmosphere in Washington after the election results were announced, said, “There is fatigue with Netanyahu here.”

The election deadlock in the occupied territories has extinguished Washington’s hopes for a quick adjustment of U.S.-Israel relations, which have faced tensions with both major U.S. parties during Benjamin Netanyahu’s extended premiership. Politico reported this information, citing the former Trump administration official.

Despite Trump’s explicit support for Netanyahu, segments of the U.S. government and both parties in Congress had hoped for an opposition victory to reverse the deteriorating relationship, which they attribute to Netanyahu’s policies. Netanyahu’s critics in Washington span various political spectrums, including moderate and progressive Democrats, former U.S. Vice President JD Vance, and parts of the ‘MAGA’ movement base that opposes U.S. involvement in foreign wars.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy has identified Netanyahu as a primary obstacle to the U.S. withdrawal from conflict concerning Iran, asserting that his re-election could prolong pressure on the Iran issue.

According to initial vote counts, neither Netanyahu’s Likud party and its allies nor the coalition led by opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot secured a majority of seats in the 120-member parliament. This situation could extend coalition government formation talks for weeks or months, with the possibility of further elections if groups fail to reach an agreement.
