China Firmly Opposes Weaponization of Space, Calls for International Treaties

Beijing has reiterated its strong opposition to any efforts to weaponize outer space and establish an arms race, urging the international community to develop effective legal frameworks to prevent such developments.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, China has firmly stated its opposition to any attempts to weaponize outer space and the development of an arms race in this domain. Guo Jia-qun, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that nations are obligated to pursue diplomatic channels and negotiations to draft effective international legal frameworks and documents aimed at preventing the deployment of weapons and averting an arms race in space.

The Chinese official highlighted the significance of peace and stability in outer space, asserting that achieving lasting peace and collective security in the space domain necessitates the enhancement of international cooperation and the formation of legal agreements among countries. Beijing has long advocated for the development of a binding legal treaty to prevent the deployment of military equipment and arms competition in outer space. Notably, Beijing and Moscow submitted a draft treaty in 2008 to the United Nations Conference on Disarmament with the objective of preventing the deployment of weapons in space and the threat or use of force against space objects.

Furthermore, in its official stance in October 2026, the Chinese government once again underscored the importance of conducting negotiations to reach an international legal document concerning space arms control.
