Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever Resigns Over 2027 Budget Impasse

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever tendered his resignation today, Monday, after his five-party coalition failed to reach a consensus on the upcoming 2027 budget. Despite the resignation letter, King Philippe has suspended his decision on the matter and announced plans to begin consultations with the leaders of the majority parties tomorrow.
The Belgian Royal Palace released a statement via the social media platform X, confirming that the monarch has put the resignation on hold and will initiate talks with coalition party chiefs to address the political deadlock.
Earlier, the Belgian newspaper De Stardaard, citing anonymous insiders, had reported that Prime Minister De Wever was expected to step down following the breakdown of budgetary negotiations. Concurrently, Bloomberg reported that the King might reject the resignation and instead urge De Wever to continue negotiations with his coalition partners.
Prime Minister De Wever had previously underscored the critical necessity of securing a formal budget agreement by Thursday. Meanwhile, the political crisis coincides with recent street protests in Belgium, where hundreds of young citizens gathered to voice opposition against austerity measures and educational reforms. Demonstrators called for increased financial backing for education, enhanced purchasing power for residents, and improved public services, while also condemning police handling of the protests.
