Digital Infiltration Disrupts Refrigeration Systems Across European Supermarkets

Major supermarket chains across Europe report widespread cooling system failures in their refrigeration units, with industry officials attributing the sudden disruptions to targeted digital infiltration.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, a series of digital disruptions on Monday affected the refrigeration and freezer systems of numerous grocery stores across several European nations, raising concerns over critical infrastructure security.

Prominent retail groups Ahold Delhaize and Colruyt reported that cooling units across dozens of their branches in Belgium and Luxembourg experienced severe malfunctions. Simultaneously, retail networks ICA and Coop in Sweden encountered abrupt temperature spikes in their food storage departments.

These recent incidents follow a strikingly similar event in October across France, where the temperature in several commercial refrigerators surged to 50 degrees Celsius, resulting in widespread food spoilage and localized fires.

Carrefour Belgium confirmed operational issues in nearly 15 of its locations, while home furnishings giant IKEA reported that one of its stores in the city of Mons was impacted by the digital disturbance. Colruyt further verified equipment damage across five of its retail outlets.

As the disruptions spread, authorities in Sweden and Estonia also reported security challenges targeting their infrastructural networks. The head of Sweden’s National Cyber Security Centre stated that authorities are actively investigating multiple ongoing cases related to the breaches.

Representatives for ICA clarified that a limited number of their stores were affected by the digital intrusions, while Coop documented operational faults in six branches. Additionally, a major supermarket network in Estonia fell victim to a comparable incident that drove the internal temperatures of its cooling systems up to 50 degrees Celsius.
