Dutch Activists Protest Microsoft AI Data Center Expansion in Amsterdam

Over one hundred Dutch activists breached a Microsoft data center construction site in Amsterdam on Friday, protesting the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure amid coordinated global demonstrations across 16 countries.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, more than 100 Dutch activists entered the construction site of a Microsoft data center in the Dutch capital of Amsterdam on Friday to voice their strong opposition to the accelerated growth of processing capacities required for artificial intelligence technologies. These protests coincided with similar strikes and demonstrations taking place across 16 countries.

Following an initial gathering at the site, the protest groups managed to enter the building, scale construction cranes, and display banners expressing their disapproval of the project. Environmental activists argue that the proliferation of data centers places mounting pressure on local water and electricity resources, forcing these massive facilities into direct competition with residential housing and local businesses for limited resources.

Furthermore, the demonstrators warned that this trend undermines climate goals, while the heavy concentration of data and corporate power in the hands of major private technology firms poses severe societal risks. Conversely, technology proponents maintain that such vital infrastructure initiatives are essential to meet the surging global demand for artificial intelligence and cloud computing services.

This wave of protests was organized by the “Stop Polluting Data Centers” coalition and is scheduled to run for two days, drawing participation from digital rights and environmental organizations who are demanding a moratorium on the construction of large new data centers until clearer government regulations are established to govern the sector.

According to the planned schedule, the protests are set to continue with marches in Dublin, demonstrations outside the parliament in Warsaw, and further actions targeting another Microsoft data center project in Denmark. Public criticism and discontent regarding the rapid expansion of data centers have been steadily rising across a broad geographic span, stretching from Spain to India and the United States.

In related developments, technology stocks experienced a sharp decline on Thursday amid growing market concerns that stricter regulatory frameworks might be introduced to curtail the artificial intelligence boom. Currently, the Netherlands hosts approximately 200 data centers, comprising operational facilities alongside others undergoing active construction or planning phases.
