Patriotic Union of Kurdistan Withdraws from Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government

Bafel Talabani, leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), has announced the party’s official withdrawal from the Kurdistan Regional Government, citing a lack of commitment to democratic principles by the Kurdistan Democratic Party.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Bafel Talabani, the president of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), delivered a speech announcing his political faction’s exit from the governance structure of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region while strongly criticizing the performance of the current administration. He noted that he had anticipated the establishment of more efficient governments compared to past terms, alongside the cultivation of more constructive relations with Baghdad.

Accusing the Kurdistan Democratic Party of failing to adhere to democratic principles and the popular will in Iraq, the Kurdish political leader emphasized that his party no longer recognizes the region’s parliament or its sessions, thereby formally declaring a severance of cooperation and withdrawal from the government.

This decisive political move followed an internal meeting of the PUK leadership council on Thursday, during which a majority of members voted in favor of exiting the Kurdistan Regional Government.
