Hungary will soon approve the bill for Sweden’s accession to NATO

In his annual speech about the country’s policy priorities, he said: The Hungarian Parliament approved the agreement of Sweden’s accession to NATO. It will be approved at the beginning of the spring session, which is scheduled to open on February 26.

Orban went on to add: Our dispute with Sweden is nearing its end. Together with the Prime Minister of Sweden, we have taken important steps towards rebuilding trust. We are getting closer to be able to approve Sweden’s accession to NATO at the beginning of the spring session of the parliament.

The spring session of the Hungarian Parliament will begin after the winter break on February 26. In the summer of 2022, the Hungarian cabinet submitted a bill to the parliament to approve Sweden’s membership in NATO. Hungary is the only remaining NATO country whose parliament has not yet approved this bill.

On March 27, 2023, the Hungarian Parliament gave the green light to Finland’s accession to NATO, but the review of Sweden’s proposal postponed The two Northern European countries simultaneously applied for NATO membership on May 18, 2022 and said that this action was due to the developments in Ukraine.
