The beginning of a new round of violence in Haiti

A new wave of violence and chaos in Haiti began with a new attack by armed criminal groups in Port-au-Prince, the capital of this country in the Caribbean region.

Residents of Port-au-Prince told AFP on Saturday that armed gangs in the Fort National area of the Haitian capital have been assigned to the “Operational and Intervention Unit” which is a rapid response force. They attacked.

According to local sources, the “motor intervention unit” was also another target that was attacked by armed men. So far, no report has been published about the possible casualties of these 2 attacks.

The recent violence in Haiti started with the attack of criminal gangs on 2 prisons a few weeks ago to free their imprisoned members. The International Organization for Migration has announced that more than 33,000 people have left the city of Port-au-Prince in the last 2 weeks alone following the recent violence.

Farhan Haq, the spokesman of the UN Secretary General, has also warned that about half of the Haitian people are facing a “crisis or the most severe level of food insecurity”.

Haiti’s unpopular Prime Minister Ariel Henri recently agreed to step down and form a transitional government. However, the negotiations on the formation of a transitional government have been very slow and have not yet reached a conclusion.

Haiti has faced poverty, violence, political instability and natural disasters in the past decades, but after the assassination of the former president of Haiti, Juvenal Moaz, in 2021, chaos intensified in this country.
