G7 Leaders Welcome U.S.-Iran Agreement, Emphasize Maritime Security

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, G7 leaders have welcomed the announced agreement between the United States and Iran, expressing their support for its implementation and emphasizing their readiness to participate in advancing this process. The statement highlights the necessity of maintaining freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, and continuing diplomatic efforts in the region. The G7 leaders described the agreement as a “historic opportunity” to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. They also stressed that passage through the Strait of Hormuz must continue unimpeded and without the imposition of tolls, adding that a defense initiative led by France and the United Kingdom could help resume shipping in this vital maritime chokepoint. The statement reiterated that Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons. Furthermore, the G7 leaders supported the establishment of a strong and immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and emphasized efforts to disarm the Lebanese government. They also called for accelerating the diversification of energy sources to reduce vulnerabilities associated with the Strait of Hormuz. The statement expressed support for a “diplomatic, comprehensive, and robust agreement” that complements the U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding, noting that negotiations concerning Iran should also consider regional threats. The G7 leaders underscored the usefulness of involving regional and international partners and the International Atomic Energy Agency in the negotiation process.
