Italian PM Meloni Responds to Trump’s Remarks, Stresses National Interest

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has responded to mocking statements made by the U.S. President against her, declaring that being friends with Donald Trump has “certainly” not helped her popularity in Italy.
Meloni stated in an Instagram post that Trump’s “constant and baseless verbal attacks” are “meaningless,” following comments from the U.S. President questioning her political standing.
The Italian Prime Minister elaborated, “Regarding my popularity, being friends with you has certainly not helped it, nor does it depend on my relationship with you. My popularity is not your concern. I suggest you focus on your own popularity.”
She further emphasized that Rome makes its decisions based on Italy’s national interests.
This exchange follows earlier comments from Trump on Saturday, who claimed Meloni created a “big logistical problem” by preventing the United States from using Italian air bases for military operations against Iran.
In recent days, Trump had made disparaging remarks about Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, stating, “She begged me to take a picture with her! She really wanted a picture with me. I wasn’t willing to do it at all, but I felt sorry for her!”
