Iraqi Prime Minister Vows Unwavering Fight Against Corruption

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi has declared the initial phase of the anti-corruption campaign is underway, vowing decisive action and the recovery of public funds.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi emphasized on Monday that the first phase of the fight against corruption has commenced, and the government will diligently pursue the recovery of public assets. He stressed that there will be no leniency or tolerance shown towards corrupt individuals.

The Iraqi Prime Minister also announced that oversight bodies have been tasked with receiving and scrutinizing any indications of corruption or negligence in the performance of government ministries. Recent reports from Iraqi sources indicated the execution of several judicial rulings in corruption cases, with dozens of lawmakers and officials arrested based on confessions from a senior Ministry of Oil official.

Iraq’s official state news agency (WAA) cited high-ranking sources confirming the arrest of 47 defendants, including members of parliament and Iraqi officials, on corruption charges. These arrests reportedly stem from the confessions of Adnan al-Jumaili, the Deputy Minister of Oil. Among the prominent figures named is Muthanna al-Samarai, head of the Azm Coalition and a member of parliament.

Concurrently, Iraq’s Federal Commission for Combating Corruption, known as “Transparency,” announced that it is implementing judicial orders against several individuals accused of embezzling public funds. The commission highlighted that these actions are the result of collaboration between the judicial, executive, and legislative branches, with all measures taken carefully, lawfully, and within the regulatory framework.

Previously, Iraqi sources had reported a widespread wave of arrests targeting Iraqi politicians and business figures in connection with corruption cases, stating that these operations are being conducted under government supervision and that the number of detainees is increasing.
