Finland’s Foreign Minister: Europe is Not Neutral in Ukraine Conflict

Finland’s Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen stated that Europe should not act as a neutral mediator in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing strong support for Ukraine.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen has asserted that Europe must not be perceived as a passive seeker of peace talks in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. In an interview with the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), Valtonen clarified that the European continent is not a neutral intermediary and unequivocally supports Ukraine, necessitating a strategic and effective approach from Europe.

Valtonen had previously commented that Europe needs to decisively determine its objectives for engaging in negotiations with Russia concerning Ukraine. This stance contrasts with sentiments expressed by some European leaders.

Earlier, Charles Michel, President of the European Council, had indicated that the European Union should establish direct communication channels with Moscow to ensure the Russian perspective is heard. Michel’s efforts to foster this dialogue have sparked considerable debate among European politicians and within the media regarding the opportune timing for negotiations and the designated representative for the EU should discussions resume.

In response, Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted that the European Union has thus far limited itself to speculation regarding potential figures for negotiation with Moscow.
