German Chancellor Pledges Continued Support for U.S.-Iran Peace Process

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that NATO members will leverage the upcoming Ankara summit to discuss the latest developments in West Asia and diplomatic efforts to achieve a peace agreement between the United States and Iran. He reiterated Germany’s commitment to fostering lasting peace in the region.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on Wednesday that member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will utilize the upcoming summit in Ankara to examine the latest developments in West Asia and ongoing diplomatic endeavors aimed at securing a peace accord between the United States and Iran. This announcement was made during a joint press conference in Berlin with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Chancellor Merz highlighted that the NATO summit’s agenda will encompass the future of the alliance, transatlantic cooperation, and sustained support for Ukraine, alongside addressing the evolving situation in West Asia. “The NATO meeting will also address the future of the Middle East (West Asia),” Merz informed reporters. “We continue to assist in achieving lasting peace between the United States and Iran.”

In his remarks, Merz asserted, “Our common objective remains the same: ending Iran’s nuclear program and permanently reopening the Strait of Hormuz.” This statement was made without acknowledging Iran’s peaceful nuclear program or the security of the Strait of Hormuz prior to what he described as American-Zionist aggression and subsequent insecurity within Iranian territory.

Responding to an inquiry about Berlin’s willingness to contribute to a proposed $300 billion reconstruction fund for Iran, the German Chancellor indicated that such financial support would be contingent upon the establishment of a stable ceasefire. “We are now hoping for an end to the hostilities and the conclusion of an agreement that goes beyond the existing memorandum of understanding,” Merz stated.

He further affirmed Berlin’s repeated expressions of readiness to support a peace agreement between the United States and Iran. “Everything is open for discussion when the focus shifts to the reconstruction of the region’s devastated infrastructure,” Merz added. “But first and foremost, the war must stop.”
