Israeli Knesset Approves Bill to Restrict Calls to Prayer

The Israeli Knesset has given preliminary approval to a controversial bill that would limit the broadcast of the call to prayer from mosques in occupied territories, sparking strong opposition.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the Israeli Knesset has voted in preliminary readings to approve a law restricting the broadcast of the call to prayer from mosques in territories occupied in 1948. The vote saw 50 Knesset members support the anti-Palestinian and anti-Islamic legislation, with 36 members voting against it.

This development follows earlier reports from Israeli television indicating that the bill to ban the call to prayer was under reconsideration and being drafted in a more stringent manner by the Knesset. Channel 2 of Israeli television had reported that the revised draft law grants Israeli police the authority to raid mosques that broadcast the call to prayer and confiscate their loudspeakers. Furthermore, a fine of at least 10,000 shekels, the currency of the Israeli regime, would be imposed on such mosques.
