Hugo Broos Steps Down as South Africa Head Coach, Considers Advisory Role
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Hugo Broos, the 74-year-old head coach of the South African national football team, has officially announced his resignation from the position, concluding his tenure as the team’s manager.
Broos, who had previously indicated his intention to retire after the World Cup, had raised questions about his future career path following South Africa’s elimination by Canada in the Round of 16. However, in an interview with the Belgian website “VoetbalNieuws,” he affirmed his definitive decision to step down from the coaching role.
The experienced coach stated, “Will I continue as a coach? No, this decision is irreversible. If they need me for another responsibility, for example, scouting, that’s a different matter, but football will no longer be a 24/7 part of my life.”
Broos also disclosed that he has spoken with the President of the South African Football Federation and has received an offer to continue his involvement in a different capacity. He added, “The federation president wants to keep me, but in a role like an advisor. I will return to South Africa at the end of July to officially say goodbye and see what proposals they have for me.”
During his five-year tenure with South Africa, Hugo Broos became the longest-serving coach in the team’s history. He successfully guided the country back to the World Cup after a 16-year absence and, for the first time, led the national team to the knockout stages of the tournament.
The Belgian coach humorously commented on his retirement, saying, “My wife is happy that I’m retiring, but she has warned me to just be careful not to bother her! If I have to spend a few weeks in South Africa every couple of months, why not? It’s better than being idle at home and causing trouble for others.”
