Ukraine’s Air Defense Strained by Russian Missile Barrage Amid Global Stock Depletion

Ukraine is struggling to intercept Russian ballistic missiles, with Patriot systems unable to engage due to depleted stocks, exacerbated by global demand and the ongoing conflict involving Iran, according to the Financial Times.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, a report by the Financial Times indicates that Ukraine‘s air defense capabilities have been severely tested, with its Patriot missile systems unable to intercept ballistic missiles during recent Russian attacks due to depleted missile reserves. The report highlights that on August 5th, Russia launched 24 ballistic missiles, 4 anti-ship missiles, and 115 drones targeting Kyiv. While Ukraine’s air defenses managed to shoot down 98 drones, they failed to intercept any of the ballistic missiles. Three days later, six more ballistic missiles struck the Ukrainian capital, resulting in three fatalities.

The Financial Times further noted that Kyiv requires approximately 300 additional Patriot missiles to counter potential Russian operations during the winter. This comes as Russia set a new record in July by firing 198 ballistic and hypersonic missiles. The report suggests that the conflict involving Iran has also diminished the missile stockpiles of the United States, Persian Gulf nations, and Europe. This situation has made Ukraine’s allies more hesitant to commit their limited reserves.
