US Treasury Secretary Claims Iran Takes Sanctions Seriously Amid Economic Woes

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Monday during an interview with CNBC that Iran is taking sanctions very seriously and its officials are shocked by the country’s economic condition. Bessent sought to justify some of the economic difficulties faced by the U.S. due to the costly aggression against Iran, making the claim that Iran is launching aggressive operations due to economic failure.

The Treasury Secretary, anticipating a defeat for his Republican colleagues in the upcoming midterm elections, attempted to explain some of his country’s governmental failures despite spending tens of billions of dollars in aggression against Tehran. He said, “Iran, due to failure in the economic arena, engages in offensive and operational (military) actions. I want to thank the European Union for their support of the ‘economic exclusion operation.'”

Responding to a reporter’s question about a specific timeline for a potential collapse of Iran’s economy, Bessent replied, “We do not necessarily want Iran’s economy to collapse; we just need to bring their government to its senses.”

Despite experiencing the failure of “maximum pressure” against Iran during the first term of Donald Trump’s presidency, Scott Bessent claimed that their “economic exclusion operation” will lead them towards a desire to reach an agreement. The U.S. official reiterated Washington’s deceptive claims, disregarding the peaceful nature of Tehran’s nuclear program, stating: “The President’s position is completely clear, they must abandon their nuclear program, hand over high-enriched uranium, stop supporting proxy forces, and the Strait of Hormuz must also remain open.”
